Japan tried bailing out its banks in '98 and '99. The result-it didn't help the economy and in 2003 the government had to take over 2/3 of the voting stock so that it would control the company. As usual, once the government begins to intervene in business it has to take over more and more of it to fix the problems caused by earlier intervention. The Japanese only spent 10.1 billion "saving" banks, and already it looks like nationalizing the Resona bank will become a model for future government action. Resona is going to cut the salaries of its almost 20,000 employees by 30%-these are the kinds of results government bailouts lead to.
For an interesting read on a better and simpler solution to the economic crisis, read this article. It recommends letting the companies go bankrupt instead of bailing them out. Funny how government got us into this trouble in the first place by promoting the lending of sub-prime loans and then try to get credit for "saving" us taxpayers, all the while exacerbating the problem by promoting the idea that we are in a depression.
This article discusses Gov. Tim Pawlenty's statement on Meet the Press regarding intelligent design. It then goes on to point out that the battle over what is taught in schools should not be up to the government anyway.

The article cited in this Discovery Institute blog is from the NY Times and it discusses the work of a man hell-bent on converting his evangelical students to believe in evolution. He worked hard with the Department of Education to make evolution a required topic in schools and now he teaches it with religious fervor. According to Florida's Department of Education evolution is the "organizing principle of life science". So now evolution has replaced God as the organizing principle, and teachers in Florida and some other states must teach it as such because of the ever more stringent guidelines that the Department of Education places forth. This is not the case in all states, however- the article cites 'religious advocates' who successfully lobbied in Louisiana for a law that protected the right of schools to teach alternative theories to the theory of evolution. The article goes on to say "there are [no alternative theories] that scientists recognize as valid." Which scientists?! There is by no means a consensus among scientists that the theory of evolution is the only viable theory. In fact, there are many scientists who find it bogus. Read the blog to see some of the obvious scientific errors, but also read the article it cites to see the enthusiasm of evolution advocates. We should care this much and more for we believe in something real and true. We should care that the Truth is not allowed to be taught in schools and that this heavily flawed theory is being posited as the only option for a reasonable mind to accept. We should be willing to challenge the State Department of Education's mandate to atheism.
This article is not for everyone- its an interview with two women who had been sold into prostitution. I included it because we need to be aware of the debt we owe the Catholic Church for the privileged position women have in western culture. Go here to read the article.
This article explains the problems of letting unions and politicians run the school system. Its a reminder of just how noble (and economically efficient) St. Peter's is.
