Evolution in Public Schools

The article cited in this Discovery Institute blog is from the NY Times and it discusses the work of a man hell-bent on converting his evangelical students to believe in evolution. He worked hard with the Department of Education to make evolution a required topic in schools and now he teaches it with religious fervor. According to Florida's Department of Education evolution is the "organizing principle of life science". So now evolution has replaced God as the organizing principle, and teachers in Florida and some other states must teach it as such because of the ever more stringent guidelines that the Department of Education places forth. This is not the case in all states, however- the article cites 'religious advocates' who successfully lobbied in Louisiana for a law that protected the right of schools to teach alternative theories to the theory of evolution. The article goes on to say "there are [no alternative theories] that scientists recognize as valid." Which scientists?! There is by no means a consensus among scientists that the theory of evolution is the only viable theory. In fact, there are many scientists who find it bogus. Read the blog to see some of the obvious scientific errors, but also read the article it cites to see the enthusiasm of evolution advocates. We should care this much and more for we believe in something real and true. We should care that the Truth is not allowed to be taught in schools and that this heavily flawed theory is being posited as the only option for a reasonable mind to accept. We should be willing to challenge the State Department of Education's mandate to atheism.
